It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Alan Hubbard, a renowned journalist, editor, and writer who left an indelible mark on the world of sports. Alan passed on Thursday, 8 June, after a short illness leaving behind a legacy that will forever be cherished by those who knew and admired him. During this difficult time, Frank Warren and the entire Queensberry team extend their deepest condolences and sympathies to Alan's family and friends.
Hubbard's exceptional career as a sports journalist spanned an impressive 69 years, during which he garnered numerous accolades for his exceptional work. Notably, he served as a sports columnist for the Independent on Sunday and held the esteemed position of sports editor at The Observer. His unparalleled dedication and commitment to his craft earned him prestigious recognition, including the esteemed title of SJA diarist of the year on two separate occasions.
Throughout his illustrious career, Hubbard's passion for sports led him to cover an array of events that captivated the world. He provided unparalleled coverage of 16 Summer and Winter Olympic Games, 10 Commonwealth Games, several football World Cups, and witnessed world title fights that spanned from Atlanta to Zaire.
Alan's vibrant and charismatic personality allowed him to connect with individuals from all walks of life. In his own words, he once recounted some of his most memorable experiences, stating, "I've had tea with Trump and jogged along with Boris, sparred verbally with Muhammad Ali, shaken hands with Nelson Mandela, and been sworn at by a man of God."
