Wembley, the place to be on July 19
By Frank Warren
We’ve got an absolutely monumental ‘I was there’ occasion coming up on July 19 at Wembley Stadium. So make sure you are there!
On British soil in London, the Undisputed Heavyweight Championship of the World will be fought for between the two current champions, the unified ruler Oleksandr Usyk and the IBF king Daniel Dubois.
It is the greatest heavyweight fight that can be made and it will happen, right here in old Blighty.
It will be the first time ever a heavyweight fight carrying this status will take place in this country, so we are talking about a piece of history. This fight will be like the Super Bowl of our sport with the biggest prize of all on the line. The bounty couldn’t be any greater.
It is, of course, a rematch of a fight that took place in Poland in 2023 and it will obviously carry with it a strong narrative over the so-called ‘low blow’ that denied Daniel a triumph on the night.
I won’t bang on about it anymore here - you all know my thoughts on it by now.
But Usyk will be up against a different Daniel this time around. In Wroclaw, he wasn’t a Daniel who really believed in himself. In terms of strength and ability he has always been elite, but it is his mentality that has strengthened now, his fortitude. It all comes with experience and maturity, plus success at the highest level.
Daniel has proved to everyone and himself that he belongs at the top of the sport. His victories over Jarrell Miller, Filip Hrgovic and Anthony Joshua have demonstrated it.
Winning all the belts on July 19 will make him the biggest A-Lister in boxing. Everything and anyone in the heavyweight division will have to come through him for a piece of the action.
On a personal note, although I tend not to give too much thought to these things, I will be a very proud man that myself and Queensberry will be staging this undisputed heavyweight event. The first British promoters to do so on home turf and, trust me, we will do it justice.
Congratulations to our man Anthony Yarde who, on Saturday, got the better of Lyndon Arthur when the pair completed their trilogy of fights at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on the Ring Magazine event topped by Eubank vs Benn.
It wasn’t a typically swashbuckling performance from Anthony and we probably have to give credit to Lyndon for that. He had to guts it out and ultimately found his success by getting up close and taking away Lyndon’s jab and favoured range.
It is not really the way Anthony likes to fight, but needs must and he can now press on into a number of huge fights that are there waiting to be made.
We all know the names who are out there and those are the fights we need to get done.
I am back out to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday on Riyadh Season duty for the introduction of Canelo into Riyadh season. The great Mexican can make more history for himself by becoming a two-time undisputed super middleweight champion if he can defeat the IBF champion William Scull on Saturday.
The last time I was directly involved in a Canelo fight was back in 2016 with Liam Smith when the then challenger for the WBO title was operating at super welterweight.
I will be interested to see him fight close-up again because Hamzah Sheeraz is now a 168-pounder and could well be an option for Canelo further down the line, as will Chris Eubank Jr, now Canelo is signed up for a clutch of fights with Riyadh Season.
There is also heavyweight action on the card, with big Martin Bakole back in the ring against Efe Ajagba, plus another Mexican super middleweight star in Jaime Munguia seeking revenge against Bruno Surace.
