A simmering light heavyweight feud was reignited the moment ink was put to paper on the contract for the November 7 rematch between domestic rivals Joshua Buatsi and Willy Hutchinson.
Of course, this showdown now enjoys the added dimension of being for the WBC World Light Heavyweight Championship and it is the famous old AO Arena in Manchester, formerly the MEN, that will stage a bumper night of title action.
There will be no shortage of spice across fight week. People in boxing circles and far beyond know full well that Buatsi and Hutchinson don’t care much for each other.
Cheeky chatterbox Hutchinson achieved something no opponent managed before by appearing to shake the ultra-calm exterior of the reserved and considered Buatsi.
Hutchinson has always been a loveable scamp with, as the old saying goes, more rabbit than Sainsbury’s. He has got all the talk and, boy, can he talk, 10 to the dozen.
You don’t get the feeling that any of it is premeditated or with particular ill feeling because, half the time, it seems like even he isn’t sure what he is going to say next.
It is all part of his shtick. Hutchinson is a born entertainer, in and out of the ring and if his own brand of patter and chatter can be employed to wind up the opposition, then why not?
Against the more stoic and silent operators like Buatsi, the jibes bounce off them. But there is a line that shouldn’t, in the mind of the Londoner, be crossed.
All the qualities possessed by Buatsi, at a personal and professional level, were continually questioned by a relentless Hutchinson at every opportunity.
The 2016 Olympic medalist was repeatedly labelled as a fool, clown and idiot by his younger rival and it seemed only a matter of time before Buatsi might break.
Buatsi believed Hutchinson was using the presence of television crews for protection, picking his moments to strike only when the cameras were rolling.
At a pre-fight face to face, Buatsi had finally had enough and asked for the cameras to be turned off before turning on Hutchinson for he considered disrespect.
They were pulled apart when the hands of Buatsi reached for the throat of Hutchinson and security had to be on hand again at the final face-off.
On September 21, 2024, the pair could finally lay hands on each other for real at Wembley Stadium and the fight didn’t disappoint. It was Buatsi who walked the walk and stopped the talk.
He put Hutchinson down twice, in the sixth and ninth, and it was Buatsi’s spiteful work to the body that doused the spark of the young Scot.
Buatsi was crowned WBO Interim world champion under the Wembley Arch.
The talk hasn’t been quite as unrelenting this time around, but Hutchinson couldn’t resist revealing his opinion that Buatsi is now ‘shot to bits’ and ‘past it’.
That remains to be seen, but what you can be sure of is that verbal hostilities will resume next week when the fight week festivities launch in Manchester.
