Limond To Launch Queensberry Journey
By Queensberry Promotions
FORMER INTERNATIONAL AMATEUR and new professional Drew Limond will be promoted by Frank Warren and Queensberry after signing terms with the Hall of Fame promoter.
The 18-year-old Drew - son of the much-missed British, Commonwealth and European champion Willie Limond - teams up with one of his father’s former promoters for a career that launched in Renfew, where he made his professional debut on Friday on the same show as his older brother Jake. Drew recorded a shutout victory over four rounds against Joe Hardy.
“It is obviously amazing for me because Frank is one of the best promoters in the world, so just to be part of the team is class,” said Drew on his promotional alliance. “My dad had a good relationship with Frank and I think Frank liked my dad as well.
“I’ve represented the national team of Scotland right across the world. I’ve been to the European championships, won British and obviously Scottish championships. I’ve been with Scotland in Argentina, Serbia and Italy.
“I think I had around 30 amateur fights in the end. I can do a bit of everything, mix it up from long range to short. I am a sort of box fighter and I hope there is a bit of power in there.
“When I saw Frank earlier in the year he said we would be doing four-rounders maybe five times a year and then work up from there.”
In a move that could possibly sweeten the deal, Drew is considering whether to retain his listed ring moniker of ‘White Sugar’, which was never originally intended for the public domain.
“I don’t know if I’ll keep it because it was only me and my brother having a laugh. I boxed in France and the announcer knew about White Sugar. I didn’t tell him, so I might keep it, I don’t know yet.”
Frank Warren is personally delighted to be establishing a family connection with the signing of the young welterweight.
“This signing of Drew means a lot to me because I was very fond of his dad and was honoured when he came to see me asking me to promote his son. He kept in touch over the following days saying how happy he was that Drew was coming to us, then we received the shocking news of his sudden passing.
“It will be special for me to guide Drew’s career and we will do everything we can to help him fulfil his enormous potential.”
