Super Middleweight William Scull

Saul Alvarezvs WIlliam Scull

The great Mexican, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, will set about his attempt to restore his complete domination of the super middleweight division on May 3 at the ANB Arena in Riyadh in the first of four fights Canelo Alvarez will enter into as part of Riyadh Season.

The star attraction takes on William Scull in a bid to reunite himself with the IBF world title he was forced to relinquish due to mandatory orders and to do so he must defeat the Germany-based Cuban who overcame Vladimir Shishkin to win the title himself in October of last year.

For Canelo the stakes are very high because plans are in place for a Riyadh Season extravaganza in September, to be staged in Las Vegas, where he would potentially go up against the pound-for-pound king Terence Crawford in a clash for the ages, a Superfight that will capture the eyes of the world.

But first he must inflict a first defeat on the unbeaten 32-year-old Skull and put his championship jigsaw back together again.

May 3 will represent the first fight night Canelo will experience outside of North America. Six out of his last seven fights have taken place in Las Vegas, with the other happening in his homeland.

Last time out, Canelo Alvarez overcame the unbeaten Edgar Berlanga via unanimous decision, the same outcome as his previous title defence against the also undefeated Jaime Munguia.

Saul Alvarez

"Canelo"

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, 34, is a Mexican icon and a pound-for-pound great of boxing, having held world titles in four weight divisions, unified titles in three, lineal status in two and undisputed champion at super middleweight.

The undisputed distinction was paused in 2024, but the full set of belts could be back together again on May 3 when he fights the IBF world champion William Scull in Riyadh.

Canelo Alvarez is also holder of the Ring Magazine belt at super middleweight.

His reign at 168lbs began in late-2020 when he seized the WBA super world title from Callum Smith and also took the vacant WBC belt via a unanimous decision. He added the WBO belt with a eighth round stoppage of Billy Joe Saunders in May 2021 and completed the set with Caleb Plant’s IBF honour six months later.

Canelo then challenged himself at 175lbs for a second time - he defeated Sergey Kovalev in November 2019 - before going up against Dmitrii Bivol in Las Vegas with the Russian’s WBA world title on the line. Bivol retained his status with a magnificent performance of slick boxing to win on all three scorecards.

The Gennadiy Golovkin trilogy was completed in September 2022 when Canelo Alvarez triumphed in Las Vegas, before John Ryder and Jermell Charlo were accounted for in 2023. Jaime Munguia and Edgar Berlanga were Canelo’s most recent successes

"El Indomable"

William Scull, 32, hails from Matanzas in Cuba, but made his home in Berlin, Germany to pursue a career in professional boxing.

He is the reigning and defending IBF super middleweight champion of the world, who will defend his title against former champion Saúl Álvarez on May 3 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Scull is undefeated in 23 fights as a professional, with nine of his wins coming via stoppage.

In 2024 Skull was put forward as mandatory challenger for the IBF portion of Canelo’s undisputed status at super middleweight, but the Mexican didn’t accept the challenge and vacated the belt. Skull fought the No.2 contender Vladimir Shishkin and prevailed via a unanimous decision.

Now, as part of Riyadh Season, Skull will also fight for the WBA, WBC, WBO and Ring Magazine belts at the ANB Arena.
