THE BUZZ OF anticipation will reach fever-pitch levels in the moments before Daniel Dubois and Fabio Wardley return to the ring to continue business at The o2 on Saturday.
Roles have reversed since the first time around because it is Daniel who is now WBO world heavyweight champion following the captivating 11 rounds of non-stop action back in May.
At the conclusion of hostilities, so many people told me it was the best and most exciting heavyweight fight they had ever witnessed. And I had to agree with them.
It was an absolute thriller that had everyone teetering on the edge of their seats. It was a fight that had everything between two highly athletic and fantastically conditioned heavyweights.
When Fabio walked to the ring as WBO Kiong he got off to a storming start by knocking over Daniel in something like 10 seconds.
The alarm bells should probably have been ringing in the Dubois corner, but Daniel composed himself superbly and started to find his range. Even being put down again in the third did not put him off his stride and he ultimately bludgeoned his way to a stoppage triumph.
You have to give Daniel enormous credit for the resolve and fortitude he shows when the chips are down. He went into his world title challenge against Fabio off the back of a demoralising second defeat to Oleksandr Usyk last year.
There were no thoughts of easing himself back, he wanted straight back in at the highest level possible. It was like the way he responded after his first Usyk reverse. He put himself right back in the picture with a stunning three-fight success over Jarrell Miller, Filip Hrgovic and Anthony Joshua. That is still a win-treble to be reckoned with.
Fabio’s story is equally remarkable and an unlikely tale of an unlicensed scrapper who became heavyweight champion of the world.
The thing is with Fabio is he never knows or accepts defeat. Despite the shellacking he took against Daniel last time out, he didn’t want to give in, but wasn’t given any choice in the end.
His standout wins over the likes of Justis Huni and Joseph Parker came about only after prolonged periods of adversity. He just seems to find a way most of the time.
It came as absolutely no surprise to me that within days of his first career defeat, Fabio activated the rematch clause. I think it is a fight we would have had to have made by public demand anyway.
Fabio is a smart operator and he will be convinced he has made the necessary changes to bring about revenge success.
For all of us watching on, it will just be a treat to witness first hand and this will be the third world heavyweight title fight we have staged in this country in 2026.
