Professional Career
Itauma transitioned to professional boxing in 2023, marking a significant step in his boxing career. His debut fight was on the Artur Beterbiev vs. Anthony Yarde undercard on the 28th of January, 2023 at Wembley Arena in London against Marcel Bode of the Czech Republic.
From the beginning of round number one, Itauma was applying pressure and landing some good punches. Just 23 seconds into the fight, a powerful left to the guard of Bode brought him down and despite getting back up on his feet, the referee Mark Bates ended the match and declared Itauma the winner via first-round knockout.
With Itauma wanting to be active and climb through the ranks quickly, his second professional fight came less than two months later. This time, it was at the Telford International Centre against Ramon Alberto Ibarra of Argentina.
Despite Ibarra being more active than Bode in the ring, it took Itauma just 35 seconds to find the jaw of the Argentine and land a powerful right hook that would bring him to the ground. After a ten count from the referee Chris Dean, Ibarra failed to get back up on his feet, which led to Itauma’s second consecutive first-round win as a professional.
Itauma fought five more times in 2023 and once in 2024, winning all six bouts before he was presented with the biggest fight of his career to date - a bout for the WBO Inter-Continental Heavyweight title at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
This time, he had to face a far more experienced opponent with a strong professional record. It was the German heavyweight Ilja Mezencev. However, that wasn’t the only pressure that the youngster had to deal with as the bout was on the undercard of the Ring of Fire matchup between Oleksandr Usyk vs. Tyson Fury.
The fight between the two went on two out of the 10 scheduled rounds. In round one, both fighters were cautious. Near the end of the round, however, the explosiveness of Itauma was shown on full display as he landed a powerful right hook that rocked the German boxer.
In round two, both boxers started slow but after an attack from Mezencev, Moses found an opening and landed several blows that brought the more experienced boxer to the ground.
Despite getting back up on his feet before the ten count, the referee Howard Foster deemed him unfit to continue, awarding Itauma his 9th consecutive win and the WBO Inter-Continental Heavyweight title.
Two months later, Itauma had to defend his title against an even more experienced opponent, The Viking from Poland, Mariusz Wach who has been fighting professionally for almost as long as Itauma has been alive.
After two rounds of heavyweight boxing at the O2 Arena in London, the referee Michael Alexander stopped the fight halfway through round number two, declaring Itauma the winner via TKO.
Fighting Style & Techniques
Moses Itauma fights in the southpaw stance and is best known for his exceptional blend of technical skill, power, and composure. Despite his young age, he comes from a significant and undefeated amateur background, which undoubtedly laid the foundation for his success on the big stage.
Unique Style and Approach
His approach in the ring is often unpredictable due to his ability to stay patient and calculate his every move with great precision. Having won all ten of his professional fights so far, it’s easy to see why the 20-year-old is the number 13 ranked heavyweight in the UK and is one of the most feared opponents in the division.
In terms of strengths, two of the biggest weapons in Itauma’s arsenal are his mental toughness and sheer strength. In a post-fight interview, he said that he gets his strength from his Nigerian side and mental toughness from his Slovak side.
The boxing world has seen both of Itauma’s strengths on full display against many of his amateur and professional opponents and he’s surely going to take advantage of them against any pro boxer who tries to stand in his way.
Another major strength that helps Itauma overpower opponents is his ring IQ. On multiple occasions, Itauma’s unique ability to read his opponents and position himself effectively in the ring has led him to land devastating and fight-winning blows.
Future Prospects and Aspirations
With a perfect professional record, Moses Itauma is the man possibly nobody wants to fight. The youngster is already more active in the heavyweight division than the large majority of his opponents, and rightfully so considering his aspirations for breaking Mike Tyson’s record for being the youngest heavyweight champion.
Itauma’s future is most certainly bright as he has just accomplished his biggest challenge yet - Demsey McKean from Australia who had a near-perfect professional record with 22 wins and 1 loss. The bout took place at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as chief support to Oleksandr Usyk vs. Tyson Fury II.
McKean was blitzed by an Itauma onslaught and lasted less than two minutes of the first round, having been put down twice and unable to recover from the second. Itauma now holds a record of 11-0 (9 KOs).
